Achieving Weight Loss Success
Weight loss is both difficult to achieve and difficult to maintain for millions of people who have tried many various methods…and failed. There is more than one way to lose weight. But the variable that determines whether the method works or not, is patient compliance.
As a clinical dietitian it’s been my responsibility to assess and recommend the best weight loss methods and meal plans for hundreds of patients. In my experience, a low carb meal plan is best for four good reasons:
- It facilitates faster fat burning and weight loss
- It controls hunger which improves compliance
- It breaks sugar/carb addiction
- It supports better metabolic health by maintaining healthy blood sugar levels and reversing insulin resistance – a major cause of fat gain.
Yes, it takes a little time to get used to, and it takes some education and training to ensure the patient is eating as healthy as possible, but it always works if adhered to.
The keto diet has been very popular over the past 5 years and kudos to those who are able to follow it in a healthy way, because it speeds fat and weight loss quite significantly. The problem is, that it can be very restrictive and the extreme focus on fat can be unhealthy if not done right. Also, it’s disruptive to the microbiome.
My preference is the 20 gram carbohydrate “Atkins style” diet, which emphasizes protein and vegetables more than fat, ensuring important antioxidants, phytochemicals and minerals from vegetables are consumed. Fiber, considered an indigestible carbohydrate, can be consumed in any amount, which helps ensure the microbiome is nourished and also supports satiety and appetite control.
I’ve always considered it sensible to begin a weight loss plan with a “cleanse” to help jump-start the weight loss process by reducing toxins and breaking bad food habits prior to beginning a new diet plan. I’ve tried a variety of cleanse protocols, usually involving meal replacement detox shakes. But nothing I’ve tried has ever been as easy or as effective as my recent discovery of starting with the 5-day ProLon® FASTING MIMICKING DIET™ (FMD™)
ProLon® FMD™ was designed to trigger cellular detoxification and rejuvenation to support healthy aging and longevity, but I’ve discovered that this program eases the patient into ketogenesis, while revving up the metabolism and promoting quick visceral fat loss. It’s quite simply the easiest, simplest tool I’ve found to begin a weight loss program, because of it’s instant results.
For anyone following a weight loss diet, there are a variety of supplements I recommend to shore up nutrient short-falls, support the microbiome and support the metabolic processes of weight loss. There is interesting research on how 7-keto DHEA, a thermogenic compound, helps support normal metabolic rate, which is why I include it in my Weight Management Protocol.
